'UNLEARNING': Makeshift temporary al-
ternative spaces in abandoned Soho galleries
are this season's recession benefit, and here's
another squatter exhibition full of fresh
young artworks and mangey readymades
with a vengeance (playground equipment,
salt licks, loaves of bread, platform shoes,
used tampons, paper bags) by at least 26
artists. They fill every nook, shelf, and pic-
ture rack. Curator Kenny Schachter hopes to
pay the rent and create a social space by
serving coffee on Jeff Brown's old bus seats,
and 10 per cent of the proceeds will go to the
homeless. Through January 26, 142 Greene
Street, 4th floor, 777-0420. (by Kim Levin)
